Frequently Asked Questions
How does the school make money from me shopping?
The HSA purchases shopping cards at a discount from regional grocers, gas stations, clothing stores, restaurants and more. The HSA sells them to supporters like you at face value, and the difference is profit to the school.
What are the shopping cards worth?
Whatever the face value is what you pay to MBS and what is available to spend. Buy a $25 restaurant card, you pay MBS $25 and you have $25 to spend at the restaurant.
Where can shopping cards be used?
From the Atlantic to the Pacific... Most retailers are national chains which can be used nationwide. There are several local businesses with only one location to use the cards. Check the Retailer List for usage details.
How much money can we raise?
It's really up to you. Even if as few as 25 families participate, we will raise about $7,500 this year for our school. If all of our 150 families and friends routinely participate, we can earn $45,000 or more!
This is a great way to promote my business. How do I start?
First determine the shopping card or gift certificate denomination amount you want to sell, and the percent discount you will offer the school. If you don't have a gift certificate, we can assist in developing a design for your business.
Next, contact the Scrip Coordinator (email Scrip) to arrange your retailer listing, order process and delivery method.
Invoices must be submitted with order delivery for payment by school check.
What if I don't spend the full amount of the card?
Generally the remaining amount stays on the card to use on your next visit. There are a few retailers where other options are available. Review specific details on the back of the card or on the Retailer List.
Does it cost anything for me to participate?
NO. There's no registration fee and you pay the same amount you would normally pay to shop. THE CATCH? You have to plan ahead and buy your shopping cards before you go to the store.
Why is the program so successful?
- Participating retailers are stores where you shop now.
- You can help MBS without spending an extra dime.
- Retailers build strong consumer loyalty and are assured of sales.
What does SCRIP mean anyway?
Shopping Card Refund Incentive Program. It was started by a Catholic School in California, where their first year earnings of $30,000 stopped the closing of the school. Read more about it.
Are my purchases tax deductible?
No, because you get the full face value of the gift certificate and shopping card.
